Missing German tourist found dead near Symi island

A German tourist who went missing after a sailing yacht was found adrift near the Greek island of Symi has been located dead, Greek authorities announced. The discovery ends a multi-hour search that began when the vessel carrying eight German nationals was seen drifting without control.

Rescue operation located seven survivors; search continued for the eighth

The Greek coast guard said the rescue operation started on Sunday afternoon after the yacht was reported adrift in waters close to Symi. Patrol boats, an open-sea vessel and a Super Puma helicopter took part in the response.

Seven of the eight people on board were recovered in separate incidents: two managed to swim ashore on their own, one person was found on the shore by a fishing boat, and four others were located on a nearby shore by a coast guard patrol craft.

The search carried on at sea and on land for the remaining missing tourist. In the morning hours on the following day a lifeless body was found in the sea west of Symi and subsequently identified as the eighth missing passenger from the yacht.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased. The incident prompted a concentrated search-and-rescue effort by Greek services to account for everyone on the yacht and to secure the area.
