School shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University leaves two dead; attacker livestreamed

At least two people were killed and nine were wounded after a student opened fire at a school inside Ateneo de Zamboanga University on August 18, 2026, local authorities reported. The incident occurred at about 7:50 a.m. in a campus building in Zamboanga City.

Police say the suspect, himself a high‑school pupil, entered a classroom on the fourth floor and began shooting at eighth‑grade students. One pupil was killed in the classroom and nine others were injured, according to local reports.

The attacker later moved to the third floor and reportedly shot himself with a pistol; local media say he died at the scene. Authorities say he was armed with both a pistol and a short combat rifle. Local coverage identified him as Nael Jalani and reported that his father is a senior official in the Bureau of Customs in Region 9.

The shooting was livestreamed on social media, and circulating footage shows a person firing first at an individual outside a classroom and then opening fire on others inside. A widely shared post on Twitter read: "BREAKING: At least 2 killed after shooter livestreams attack at #Ateneo de Zamboanga University in #Philippines." — pradhyumn sharma.

Campus response and investigation

The university issued a statement saying all students were "safe and accounted for." Police said they are continuing an investigation that includes determining how the weapons were brought onto campus and the motive for the attack.

Authorities have urged people not to spread graphic footage from the scene as investigators and emergency services continue to work. The case remains under active investigation and officials have not released further details about the victims or the attacker.
