Shooting west of Paris kills one and wounds four; suspect arrested

A gunman opened fire from a car across several suburbs west of Paris on the morning of October 23, 2026, killing one person and seriously wounding four others, French authorities said. The suspect was arrested at the scene, police added.

Attack in Yvelines, shots fired around 10:30 a.m.

Police said the shots were fired at about 10:30 a.m. in the Yvelines department, on the outskirts of the French capital. Initial exchanges with investigators indicate the shooter fired from a moving vehicle at three different locations, beginning in the town of Trappes and later continuing toward the neighbouring commune of La Verrière.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told reporters that the suspect used an automatic weapon and that the four wounded suffered serious injuries; among the victims is a 12‑year‑old child. Authorities gave no immediate explanation for a possible motive.

The Paris prosecutor’s office for counter‑terrorism has opened an inquiry that includes investigations for intentional murder linked to a terrorist plan and illegal possession of weapons, officials said.

President Emmanuel Macron posted on X that he was deeply shaken by the attack and paid tribute to the security services. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu wrote on X that judicial and security authorities are fully engaged and described the events as "very serious incidents." Interior Minister Nunez also warned authorities were preparing for mass unrest the following day and announced the deployment of 70,000 security personnel ahead of planned nationwide protests on October 24, 2026.

Investigations are ongoing and police said they would release further details as they become available.
