Putin orders private Russian data centres to reserve 10% capacity

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree obliging private data centre owners in Russia to reserve 10 percent of their capacity to support the country’s IT infrastructure, a measure announced after a recent wave of attacks on data facilities.

The directive tasks the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media with carrying out an inventory of available capacity and space in private data centres across Russia.

Commission can order release; 24‑hour access requirement

A special government commission, to be created under the decree, will have the authority to order the release of the reserved capacity. Operators must provide access within 24 hours of such an order.

The decree also allows temporary use of data centres located abroad, provided such transfers receive approval from the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Russian data centres have been targeted in recent weeks by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, and facilities run by technology companies Yandex and Sberbank were struck during the past month.
