Ribarska Banja: thermal springs, medical rehab and mountain air

Ribarska Banja, tucked into the gentle slopes of Mount Jastrebac in southern Serbia, is presented as a long-standing spa and rehabilitation destination where thermal sulfur waters and mountain air are combined for rest and medical rehabilitation.

Location, cost and a short history

The spa sits at roughly 540 metres above sea level and is reachable from Skopje by car in about 175 kilometres and approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes of driving, depending on traffic and the border crossing. An overnight stay for two at the spa complex is quoted at around 2.500 denars.

Visitors are drawn both by the setting and by the spa’s six thermal sulphur mineral springs; water temperatures are reported to reach up to 41°C, while detailed measurements note the hottest spring at 41.5 °C and other springs ranging from 25 to 38.7 °C. The springs are described as weakly alkaline, homeothermic and saline, with an average yield of 170 litres per minute.

The facility combines historic structures and modern wellness services: a renovated 16th-century Turkish bath houses thermal pools, amam, saunas, a salt room and a grotto, alongside jacuzzis, massage suites and a contemporary fitness centre. A so-called "pearl bath," once reserved for nobility, is highlighted as a special attraction.

Ribarska Banja positions itself as a specialised medical and rehabilitation centre where natural factors — thermal mineral water and curative peloid (mud) — are used under medical supervision. The spa offers balneotherapy in pools and tubs at temperatures between 38 and 42 degrees, peloid therapy, and a range of physical treatments from electrotherapy and kinesitherapy to laser therapy and massage.

Programs are aimed at a wide spectrum of conditions: inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic diseases, soft-tissue disorders, postoperative and post-traumatic rehabilitation including recovery after joint replacement, certain peripheral neurological damages and mild post-stroke rehabilitation, as well as orthopaedic corrections for posture problems such as scoliosis and kyphosis. The site also provides forest trails, an aqua park, tennis and volleyball courts and family-friendly recreation.
