U.S. Begins Paying Down UN Arrears — Washington Transfers $725 Million

The United States has begun transferring funds to the United Nations, sending $725 million as part of an effort to reduce Washington's outstanding arrears to the world body.

A letter from the State Department dated August 4 notified Congress of the planned payment, saying the money will be disbursed before the president's expected address to the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

Context and scale

UN officials in May had put the total U.S. arrears at more than $4 billion. US officials maintain that the overall figure is significantly lower and have said Washington has already made some payments toward its obligations.

Financial and aid analysts described the $725 million transfer as a step toward resolving the outstanding balance, though it represents less than 20 percent of the amount the United Nations cited in May.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned this year that the organisation faces an "inevitable financial collapse" because of unpaid member contributions, prompting reductions across several UN budgets.

The transfer marks a notable move by the Trump administration to address the dispute over dues with the UN ahead of the high-level General Assembly session in New York.
