SDSM supports LDP initiative on dual citizenship, calls for immediate return of the law to Parliament
SDSM again calls for the draft law to be returned to Parliament and to be adopted without delay and without double standards.
SDSM declared its full support for the LDP initiative to urgently adopt a law that would limit dual citizenship among holders of public office and demanded that the legal solution be returned to parliamentary procedure immediately and adopted without delays and without compromises.
The party recalled that it had previously proposed a consistent solution – according to which the legal restrictions should apply to all holders of public office without exceptions and without double standards. According to SDSM's proposal, the ban on dual citizenship should cover members of the current assembly, all ministers and government officials, directors of public enterprises and all other holders of public positions.
Criticism and a call to MPs
In the statement SDSM directed direct criticism at specific persons and groups whom it believes do not show loyalty. The text also includes the quote: “True independence and patriotism are proven by loyalty to one state – Macedonia. This cannot apply to Stoilkovikj, his colleagues from the BIA who celebrate Ratko Mladic, and the media chief Latas. For the big Serbian nationalists, agents of Serbia’s security service – it cannot apply. They must have two citizenships. They must implement the Serbian and Russian agenda and feel at home both here and there,” SDSM adds.
Today LDP reacted that the Law on the abolition of dual citizenship for members of parliament and officials is still stuck in parliamentary labyrinths. The party points out that while the authorities spend public money on celebrations for 35 years of independence, key legislative solutions regarding the loyalty of officials are being ignored.
LDP additionally called: “The celebrations are over; for true independence, take the draft Law on dual citizenship for members of parliament out of the drawer.” The party urged MPs to place the draft law high on the agenda and to bring it back before the plenary session.
