Work has begun on a parking area for MPs and other parliamentary staff inside the security zone surrounding the Parliament in Skopje, on the site that had previously been earmarked for a multi-storey garage. Parliamentary Speaker Afrim Gashi inspected the construction on site.

“I closely followed the course of the construction works for arranging the area around the Parliament. This space is gaining a tidier and more functional appearance, creating better conditions for parking and for the everyday needs of the Parliament. We continue with concrete work and with attention to every space that contributes to the more efficient functioning of the Parliament,” Gashi said.

The renovation and construction of the parking facility is budgeted at about €1.6 million, and the contract was awarded to the company Stenton gradba.

Originally, plans for the plot envisaged a nine-metre-high multi-storey garage in which up to 15 percent of the building could be used for business premises, shops or hospitality outlets. Later, Parliament adopted a law designating the land around the Parliament as a security zone, which banned construction there and foresees compensation for the company that had purchased the plot.

The authorities say the new layout will prioritise everyday operational needs of the institution and vehicle access within the secured perimeter, while the changes reflect the legal and planning decisions made since the sale of the land.
