NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashes in Chatsworth; three dead, two injured
Three killed, two injured after an NBC Los Angeles news helicopter crashed while covering a prior traffic collision in Chatsworth.
A news helicopter operated by NBC Los Angeles (KNBC‑TV) crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles while its crew was reporting on an earlier traffic collision. Three people were killed and two others were injured, authorities said.
Crash, fire and emergency response
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the helicopter went down between two commercial buildings and a post‑crash blaze spread to four vehicles and two storage containers. More than 70 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
Police have not released how many people were aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash, nor have they identified the deceased. The helicopter was assigned to NBC Los Angeles and also worked with Telemundo 52 for aerial coverage.
During the live broadcast, news anchor Colin Williams confirmed the crew had been lost. "We knew we'd lost contact with our people out there and we've just received confirmation," Williams said on air.
Several news aircraft had been covering the earlier heavy collision in the Chatsworth area when the helicopter crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the cause of the accident.
