Family to honour Vedrana Rudan’s final wish — private farewell planned

Croatian writer and columnist Vedrana Rudan has died at the age of 77 after a long illness; her family says it will honour her explicit wishes about the farewell. Relatives announced that the final goodbye will be held privately and that neither the time nor the place will be disclosed to the public.

Family will keep the farewell intimate

According to the family’s decision, Rudan will be buried in an exceptionally private, closest-family circle, just as she wanted. The announcement on her official Facebook page used a phrase she had spoken publicly during her last television appearance: "Vedrana went to an area without signal." That sentence was taken from her March 2025 interview on the programme Nedelata vo 2, when she spoke openly about her battle with serious illness and about death.

Rudan spent decades writing books, columns and commentary that often provoked strong reactions. Known for a blunt style and uncompromising opinions, she became one of the most recognisable voices on the Croatian and regional cultural scene.

The news of her passing prompted an outpouring of messages from readers and admirers across the region, many remembering her extensive journalistic and literary output. Her family’s insistence on privacy for the final farewell underlines Rudan’s long-standing preference to control how and with whom she shared the most intimate moments of her life.

Details beyond the family’s statement were not released. Journalists and cultural figures who had engaged with Rudan over the years responded to the news by highlighting the sharpness of her prose and the imprint she left on public debate in Croatia and neighbouring countries.
