Strong winds fuel wildfires across Greece; Agia Paraskevi on Crete hardest hit

Strong winds have fanned multiple wildfires across Greece, forcing firefighters and air units to battle new flare-ups and hampering containment efforts.
The most critical front is around Agia Paraskevi in the Rethymno area of Crete, where crews fought the blaze through the night and firefighting aircraft returned to the scene in the early morning hours.

New fires erupted in Achaia in the northwest of the Peloponnese and in the Xiromero area of Aetolia-Acarnania, stretching resources as teams raced to prevent further spread.
Authorities issued urgent warnings via the 112 emergency system and deployed numerous firefighters and aerial assets to the affected zones. The Hellenic Civil Protection said the risk remains exceptionally high in several areas.
Meanwhile, conditions improved on the islands of Andros and Kalymnos, though on Paros crews continue to tackle several smaller hotspots that have been reactivated by the gusty winds. Officials urged residents and visitors to avoid any activities that could spark new fires and to follow instructions from emergency services.
