Unions: September consumption basket 11.315 denars higher than government figure

Trade unions and government figures diverge sharply over how much a household needs to cover basic living costs for September, leaving many families saying official measures do not reflect their reality.

The Ministry of Economy and Labor calculated a consumption basket for September at 58.117 denars, while unions put the same basket at 69.432 denars — a gap of 11.315 denars. The disagreement has reignited criticism that official measures underestimate household needs.

Economists, citizens and proposed responses

Economists argue the government’s basket does not align with actual household expenditures. Some warn that even two minimum wages are not enough to cover basic family costs, and they point to strengthening domestic production — especially food and groceries — as a way to reduce import dependence and ease price pressure.

People on the ground share the frustration. Many say a minimum wage makes it difficult to meet monthly bills and leaves almost no room for additional expenses. They expect higher and more dignified incomes as the fastest solution to help cope with everyday costs.

Official statistics show a relatively moderate price rise: Eurostat and the State Statistical Office report annual inflation in the country in September at 2.7 percent, which is 1.1 percentage points below the European average. Still, a slower inflation rate has not translated into easier purchasing power for lower-income households.

Analysts say purchasing power remains under pressure, particularly for households with low incomes, for whom basic goods and services still represent a substantial share of the budget. The disparity between official and union calculations is likely to keep the debate over wages and social support in the spotlight.
