Jannik Sinner uncertain for US Open — will travel only if fully fit

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner remains uncertain about defending his title at the US Open as he continues treatment for a knee problem in Turin. The Italian champion has been managing the injury for some time and returned to his training base there on Monday.

He celebrated his 25th birthday on Sunday and immediately resumed therapy and conditioning work aimed at assessing the knee ahead of the hard‑court Grand Slam in New York.

Decisive days before the trip

Coaches and medical staff have focused recent sessions on testing the joint under match‑like conditions. Team officials say Monday and Tuesday will be decisive for determining the next steps and the exact travel date to the United States.

“Sinner will fly to New York only if he is 100 percent ready,” reports say, leaving open the possibility that the defending champion may skip the tournament if he is not fully recovered.

The US Open is scheduled to begin on 30 August; if Sinner withdraws, the tournament will be assured of a new champion.
