Slavcho Poposki warns of possible severe storms and heavy rain

Meteorologist Slavcho Poposki warned that the atmosphere over North Macedonia is beginning to destabilize, bringing a gradual change in the weather and the likely end of the summer heat. The bulletin, published on 10 September 2026, notes that while Wednesday morning (9 September) remained warm and sunny in most areas, conditions were expected to become unstable during the afternoon.

Poposki said:

"However, during the afternoon convective thunderstorm cells will develop locally, from which I expect torrential rain, thunder and strengthened wind. Because of the large amount of energy in the atmosphere — the result of the prolonged heat wave that affected our territory in the recent period — locally the atmospheric processes will be more intense and in the form of severe storms, accompanied by heavy torrential rain, strong wind, strong electrical discharges and with the conditions for hail formation.

And in parts of the Skopje region and in the valleys on Wednesday (9 September) in the afternoon there will be development of unstable cloudiness accompanied by torrential rain, thunder, strengthened wind and with conditions for severe storms, accompanied by heavy torrential rain, strong wind, strong electrical discharges and with the conditions for hail formation.

Because of this situation I appeal to citizens to be extra careful; in case of storms and electrical discharges do not stay outdoors or under solitary trees.

It will remain very warm, with temperatures significantly above the average for this time of year — higher than normal by 6 to 8 degrees. Thus, on Wednesday (9 September) temperatures across North Macedonia were expected to climb between 27 to 35 degrees Celsius. In Skopje and surroundings the maximum was forecast to reach around 35 degrees."

Local authorities and emergency services typically urge people to follow official warnings and avoid unnecessary travel when heavy shower activity begins. Poposki’s notice highlights that the energy accumulated during the recent heat wave can intensify afternoon convective cells, turning locally heavy showers into short-lived but powerful storms with lightning and hail.

Residents in lowland areas and around Skopje should be prepared for sudden downpours and gusty winds. Drivers are advised to reduce speed on wet roads and allow extra stopping distance. Follow local weather updates for any changes or new warnings.
