Slivnica Monastery by Prespa: 1607 church, restored konaci and a spring believed to be healing

About three kilometres from the Prespa village of Slivnica, on the slopes of Baba Mountain above the lake's eastern shore, stands the Slivnica Monastery — a compact complex that has drawn pilgrims and visitors for centuries.

The church at the heart of the monastery dates to 1607; its frescoes belong to the same period. The site is notable for a carved wooden iconostasis with the throne icons, the royal doors and a large cross that testify to the long history of worship here.

Guesthouses (konaci) were built at the end of the 17th century and over time the complex suffered at least two fires. A major restoration campaign began in 1994; by 1998 twenty guesthouse units had been renovated, offering a total of 90 beds for visitors from the Prespa region and beyond.

The spring and local belief

Within the monastery yard there is a fountain fed by a spring whose water is traditionally regarded as holy and healing. The former caretaker, known as Chichko Boško, recounted how people travelled from different regions seeking help and hope.

“This water has so far helped married couples who were married for 19 years without children. Even Albanians who learned about its miraculousness come seeking help. The Virgin Mary also helps them,” he once said.

Local clergy and the monastery present the story as a matter of faith and tradition; the belief is part of oral popular piety rather than a medically verified claim. Still, the blend of historical architecture, restored guesthouses and the spring continues to attract pilgrims, tourists and nature lovers to the Prespa area.
