Sono Motors closes operations and puts decade of solar EV technology up for sale
The Munich startup ceased activity at the end of July and is selling patents, electronics and documentation from a ten‑year solar‑car programme.

German electric‑vehicle startup Sono Motors has halted operations and entered insolvency, bringing an end to a decade of work on integrated solar technology for cars. The company stopped business activities at the end of July and is now offering its entire technology package for sale.
What’s on the block
The assets up for purchase include patents, electronic systems, engineering blueprints and full technical documentation related to the vehicle solar systems the firm developed over roughly ten years. Management says it is seeking an investor or buyer who will carry the work forward.
Sono’s best‑known project was the Sion, an electric car with dozens of solar cells integrated into its bodywork intended to provide additional charging from sunlight. The concept drew significant attention across Europe and thousands of customers placed advance payments, but the Sion never reached serial production.
After failing to secure new funding, Sono Motors returned about €50 million to customers who had paid deposits last year. The company later abandoned plans to build its own vehicles and pivoted toward selling its solar modules and systems to other vehicle manufacturers — targeting buses, vans and other electric platforms — but that strategy did not stabilise the business.
Earlier this year the parent company, Sono Group, decided to stop financing the solar business. Ownership of the operating unit was transferred to insolvency administrators for a symbolic €1, who also assumed debts of roughly €10.5 million. Sono Group has since shifted its corporate focus toward Bitcoin and other digital asset investments.
Chief executive Denis Azhar said the company is looking for an investor to take over the full set of technologies developed over the last decade, with the hope that the solar solutions might one day reappear in other electric vehicles if a buyer continues development.
