Spasovski asks about status of regional sanitary landfill for Northeastern planning region

At a parliamentary question time, SDSM MP Oliver Spasovski asked the Government about the current status of the procedure to build a regional sanitary landfill for the Northeastern planning region and whether state institutions had established irregularities during the sand excavation at Shupli Kamen.

Key points raised in the session

Minister of Environment Muhamed Hodza responded that upkeep and operation of the existing landfill fall under the competence of local government and the public enterprise "Chistota i Zelenilo," but added that the ministry is engaged in efforts to find a long-term solution for waste management in the region.

Spasovski’s question focused both on the administrative progress of the regional landfill project and on allegations connected to recent excavation activity near Shupli Kamen. He requested clarification on whether any violations had been identified by competent bodies during the sand extraction there.

Hodza outlined the division of responsibilities between municipal authorities and central institutions, noting that while maintenance is primarily local, the ministry follows up on proposals for permanent regional infrastructure and supports coordination between stakeholders.

Parliamentarians said they expect concrete timelines and clear steps from the ministry and the municipalities involved, while calling for transparent reporting if inspections of the Shupli Kamen site yielded findings relevant to environmental protection or rule of law.
