SpaceX's Starship reaches orbit and deploys Starlink satellites
Starship overcame an engine defect, reached orbit and released the first series of new Starlink satellites; Super Heavy returned to the Gulf of Mexico.
SpaceX's Starship reached orbit for the first time despite a defect in one of its engines, and during the flight overcame the problem to release the first series of the new Starlink satellites. The company says it plans to put the vehicle into regular use later this year.
The uncrewed vehicle, described as being as tall as a 40-story building, launched today from the Starbase complex on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.
Booster returns after delivering upper stage
The Super Heavy booster propelled the upper Starship stage into space and then returned to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, descending under engine control. Despite the engine issue on the Starship stage, mission controllers managed to complete the planned satellite deployment.
SpaceX officials reported that the flight demonstrated the vehicle's ability to tolerate an in-flight engine problem and still complete primary mission objectives. The deployment marks the first operational release of the next generation of Starlink satellites from Starship.
Company representatives reiterated that they expect to transition the craft into routine service later this year, aiming to use Starship for regular Starlink launches and other missions.
