About 100 foreign drivers stopped at Tabanovce after Safe City flagged offences

About a hundred foreign-registered drivers were stopped today at the Tabanovce border crossing after the Safe City system earlier identified alleged traffic offences they had committed inside North Macedonia.

The drivers were held by border authorities and reportedly are waiting to pay fines for offences detected by the camera network, officials said. The action took place on 19 August 2026.

Background and technical gap

The Safe City installation has for some time recorded vehicles with foreign licence plates that run red lights or exceed speed limits while travelling in the country. Until now, those records could not be turned into on-the-spot sanctions because there was no established mechanism to stop and penalize offenders before they left the state.

Authorities acting at Tabanovce used the information from the system to intercept drivers at the checkpoint so the alleged violators would not depart without addressing the recorded offences.

Details about how fines will be processed, whether payments will be collected immediately at the border or through later administrative procedures, were not released. The incident highlights the recent efforts to close the enforcement gap for traffic violations captured by automated systems.
