Serbia’s student movement files election list for October 25
The 'Student List – Students Win' registered for the snap parliamentary election and drew thousands to the streets of Belgrade.
Serbia’s student movement, which has led anti-government protests for nearly two years, has formally submitted its electoral list for the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for 25 October.
Thousands of citizens marched through Belgrade to back the students, who registered under the name "Student List – Students Win."
Background
The protests gained momentum after the tragedy in Novi Sad on 1 November 2024, when the collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station killed 16 people. Students have demanded accountability, arguing that corruption and failings during reconstruction work contributed to the disaster.
The student ticket is composed mainly of university professors, teachers, experts, former athletes and other public figures, presenting itself as a civic alternative in the crisis-driven political moment.
The upcoming vote is widely viewed as an important test for President Aleksandar Vučić, who has dominated Serbian politics for more than a decade. Vučić has said he could step down from the presidency to lead his party’s campaign and, if victorious, take on the premiership.
Observers say the entry of the student movement into the ballot brings a volatile new factor to a campaign already shaped by the fallout from last year’s disaster and prolonged public protests.
