Croatian priest warns against casual chatter at funerals
A priest urged restraint after noticing guests at funerals chatting about everyday topics instead of showing respect.

A Croatian priest has drawn attention online after urging people to show more restraint and respect at funerals, saying ordinary conversations are increasingly interrupting moments of farewell.
He asked for silence and dignity
Father Stjepan Ivan Horvat published a message on social media in which he described a trend he has been witnessing at burial ceremonies: while family members grieve beside the coffin, other attendees often speak about everyday topics instead of respecting the moment.
Horvat told followers that during funerals he hears people talking about subjects such as ajvar recipes, footballers, politics, prices in tourist towns and the latest changes to supermarket apps — conversations he believes are inappropriate while loved ones are saying goodbye.
He wrote: "Come on, people. The funeral is a serious and dignified event. This is the moment when we say goodbye to someone who was dear to us..."
In his post Horvat called on those present to pray, keep silence and show consideration for the bereaved. He reminded readers that there will be time later for arguments and small talk, but that a funeral requires heart and attentiveness to others.
The priest's plea has resonated with many who commented online, while others described similar experiences at memorials and services.
