Staff members of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pit Hegset damaged a historical globe connected to former president Dwight Eisenhower while attempting to move it into Hegset’s office inside the Pentagon, sources within the building confirmed.

The globe, about 76 centimetres (30 inches) in diameter and dating from the 1930s, slipped from those carrying it during the transfer. The surface was punctured near Antarctica and the globe separated from the metal stand that allows it to rotate.

Army confirmation and timing

The U.S. Army verified the damage, saying the incident occurred during an attempt to relocate the artifact on 3 February. Army spokesman Kristopher Saridzh said the item ultimately was not moved into the secretary’s office.

The object has been described internally as linked to Dwight Eisenhower, and officials involved in moving the piece are now reviewing how the transfer was handled to prevent similar accidents with fragile historical items.

The Pentagon maintains a wide range of historical artifacts across its facilities; officials declined to provide additional details about the globe’s current condition or any planned restoration work.
