Tornado, violent winds hit Germany; one woman killed, wide damage

A confirmed tornado struck parts of eastern Germany and powerful storms swept through several states, uprooting trees, ripping off roofs and causing large-scale damage, authorities reported on August 20, 2026.

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) said, "The event in Fürstenwalde was undoubtedly a tornado." Emergency crews — firefighters and police — worked late into the night at the hardest-hit sites in and around Fürstenwalde in the state of Brandenburg.

Fatality and serious injuries in Rhineland-Palatinate

In Waldorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, a tree fell on a covered shelter where two women had taken refuge during the storm. A 58-year-old woman died at the scene and a 47-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to hospital, police said. A police spokesperson said the two had reportedly been moving together when the storm approached and sought shelter under a roofed bench area.

Storm-related damage was reported across other regions as well. In Her-Grenzhausen in the Westerwald district, parts of building walls collapsed and several properties were hit. In Banbershaid, also in Westerwald, strong winds tore away sections of the facade of the sports hall "Aubachhalle." Power outages affected large numbers of households, and authorities said emergency teams responded to more than 100 locations.

On the A61 motorway, sudden gusts overturned a truck, and in Hesse's Lahn-Dill district about 60 houses suffered damage ranging from missing individual tiles to completely destroyed roofs; some roof sections were carried as far as 100 metres from the buildings, firefighters reported.

The DWD had issued warnings for severe storms earlier in the evening, particularly for northern parts of Rhineland-Palatinate; the warning was later lifted. Tornadoes remain rare in Germany but have been recorded more frequently in recent years — "Last year, 46 tornadoes were confirmed in Germany."

Explaining the phenomenon, the German Meteorological Service defines a tornado as "a column of air that is in contact with the ground, rotates around a more or less vertical axis and is located beneath a cumuliform cloud." Videos and photos of the aftermath circulated on social media as investigators and repair crews continued work on August 20, 2026.
