President Donald Trump signed a new law establishing comprehensive sanctions aimed at Russia's economy by targeting the main buyers of its oil and gas.
The measure, adopted by both houses of the U.S. Congress, grants the president broad authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest purchasers of Russian energy, with China and India specifically named as primary targets.
Expanded reach at Trump's request
At President Trump's request, the law also extends its scope to Iranian sectors for energy and weapons, bringing Tehran's energy and arms-related industries within the same sanctions framework.
Supporters say the combination of punitive tariffs and sectoral restrictions is intended to hit Moscow's revenues from hydrocarbon exports and to pressure allied states that continue sizable energy purchases from Russia.
Critics warn the measure could provoke economic and diplomatic fallout with major trading partners and complicate international efforts to coordinate a unified response to the conflict involving Russia.
Administration officials will now begin outlining how the new tariff authorities and related sanctions will be implemented and which entities among the five largest buyers will be designated for penalties.
