Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to create what he called "AI forces" and to appoint a government official charged with overseeing the area of artificial intelligence, citing concerns about the rapid pace of technological change.
Trump said the move responds to warnings about how quickly AI is developing, but he offered no specifics on the structure, responsibilities or timetable for the initiative.
He emphasized that his administration would not seek to "hamper or strangle" the industry’s growth and rejected calls to slow AI development until stronger safeguards are in place.
Economic stakes and strategic goals
In his remarks Trump framed AI as a transformative economic force. "Artificial intelligence is the next industrial revolution or the internet, but it will be even larger and more influential, perhaps 25% of our country's GDP," he said. He also said he wants the United States to remain ahead of China in AI.
Observers noted that Trump provided no timeline or operational details for the proposed "AI forces" or for the planned government lead. That leaves open questions about whether the effort would be primarily regulatory, research-focused, military-linked, or a combination of approaches.
