Trump announces new talks with Iran after suspending planned strikes

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a new round of talks with Iranian representatives is scheduled for today, after he temporarily called off further strikes against Iran.

Trump told reporters late yesterday aboard Air Force One while returning from New Jersey to Washington that the negotiations would take place "today." He did not disclose where they would be held, how long they might last, or who would take part.

Last‑minute halt and allies' appeals

Trump said the American military abandoned plans for a new wave of attacks at the last moment following appeals from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran. He warned that the planned assault "would have been the biggest attack since World War II and would have been catastrophic for them."

According to Trump, he suspended the strikes after allies told him the deal appeared close; he also said Iran had signaled that it wanted to reach an agreement. "The frameworks of the agreement," he said, were already in place.

In mid‑June the United States and Iran reached a framework deal intended to end the war that began at the end of February. Further details were to be worked out during a 60‑day transitional period, though doubts about the deal's durability emerged early and both sides have since carried out multiple major attacks. So far there has been no confirmation from Iran that the agreement is close.
