Three "erttractors" from the Directorate for Protection and Rescue are operating on a wildfire that is advancing from the Makedonski Brod side toward the Jasen hunting ground, Director Stojanche Angelov said in an afternoon statement.

Angelov said aircraft are supporting crews from the hunting ground who are trying to halt the blaze. He described the current situation as serious but controllable and warned of a major escalation if the fire reaches the pine forest.

"We still have large areas burning, but I am optimistic that this time the fire will not enter the Jasen hunting ground, because we are striking it with all our strength," Angelov said.

He added that teams will attempt to break the fire line toward the village of Belica or the nearby fishpond.

Angelov also reported other active fires: one at a site known as Ramno in the village of Brest in the municipality of Chucher-Sandevo on Skopje's Crna Gora, which currently does not send noticeable smoke into the city, and a blaze on the border between the municipalities of Struga and Debar in the area of the village Selci, where Struga firefighters are intervening and additional teams are planned to be dispatched early in the morning.

He said more than 20 new active fires were registered during the afternoon and thanked all firefighters and engaged teams for their efforts, while urging citizens to be vigilant because the forecast rains are likely delayed. "It takes only a single spark to cause a real catastrophe," he reminded the public.
