Three killed, seven injured in new Russian strikes on Kyiv and surrounding region

At least three people were killed — including a child — and seven were wounded after a fresh series of Russian strikes on Kyiv and its surrounding region, Ukrainian officials said, as neighbouring NATO members scrambled jets to protect their airspace.

Ukraine's Kyiv regional governor, Timur Tkachenko, said on Telegram that an attack using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles struck infrastructure around the capital, damaging warehouses, houses and cars. In a separate post the city military administration said two people were killed and four were injured inside Kyiv itself.

Damage, civil defence and cross-border precautions

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported fires at private homes, shops and a warehouse after the strikes, and rescuers and firefighters worked at multiple scene. A local resident told Reuters they heard several explosions during the attack.

Tkachenko warned residents to follow air-raid alerts: "The attack on the Kyiv region is ongoing. Do not ignore air-raid warnings and stay in shelters."

Romania and Poland — both EU and NATO members — said their defence ministries had scrambled part of their combat aircraft to protect each country’s airspace during the Russian strikes, posting the information on X.

Ukrainian forces also said they struck inside Russia: the governor of Samara, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, reported damage to private homes after drone strikes in that oil-processing region about 1,100 kilometres by road southeast of Moscow. Reuters said it could not independently verify Russian claims about the Samara strike.

These attacks are the latest in a string of intensified strikes on Kyiv. On September 28 at least nine people were killed and more than 80 wounded in daytime strikes that hit apartment buildings, offices, data centres and the fence of the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv. Over the past week the city military administration reported 12 people killed and about 200 injured in Russian attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said talks with allies on additional air-defence systems would continue. He added: "Talks are already scheduled for this week. I would like to thank all partners who respect agreements and deliver missiles for our air defences. A package of missiles for NASAMS recently arrived in Ukraine, and with partners we are discussing securing the necessary missiles for the Patriot systems. Belgium has also decided on F-16 aircraft. This year we will receive three more aircraft, which will further strengthen our air defence."
