Serbian tourists in Pefkochori complain after license plates were removed

A group of Serbian tourists say their holiday in Pefkochori turned sour after a police operation in which license plates were removed from several cars.

According to posts circulating on social media, the visitors claim officers focused inspections on vehicles with Serbian registration plates while cars bearing Greek plates were reportedly left alone. There is no official confirmation from the Greek police about those allegations.

Complaints intensified after an incident on the shoreline where, tourists say, a Greek-registered car remained parked in a zone where parking is prohibited, while other cars had their plates removed.

The tourists further allege that four police officers initially wrote a ticket for that vehicle and then left for a nearby restaurant. "One of the policewomen soon returned to the car, removed the ticket from the windshield, and then went back inside the venue," they say.

Visitors report that the Greek vehicle continued to obstruct traffic and block delivery trucks, while at the same time police moved Serbian cars to the opposite side of the street — a location the tourists say was permitted for parking.

As a result of these reports, those currently staying in Pefkochori are being urged to pay extra attention when parking to avoid fines or other problems.

So far the claims come from social-media posts by tourists; the matter remains unconfirmed by official police statements.
