Tusk on Democratic midterm wins: "How I love democracy!"

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted to the Democrats’ victory in recent U.S. midterm contests with an exuberant declaration: "How I love democracy!" He added that "Democracy is obviously still alive."

Briefing after a bilateral meeting

Tusk made the remarks at a press conference following his meeting with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. He said the two countries maintain good relations with the United States and insisted he has "no right to advise the President of the United States," though he offered one personal suggestion to Donald Trump: "is not to misuse the veto as a method of governance."

Turning to Poland’s own experience, Tusk warned that, "From the Polish experience I can say that the veto does not help to conduct politics well." He framed the comment as a practical observation about the limits of using vetoes as a routine governing tool.

Both leaders also spoke about regional stability. Tusk said he hopes the U.S. election outcome will contribute to stabilising the situation in the region where Poland and the Czech Republic are located.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said he expects President Trump to prioritise pledges he has made, notably to bring an end to the war in Ukraine and to stop the conflict in the Persian Gulf. Babiš warned that those wars "have a very negative effect on all Europe, which pays the highest price."

Observers say the comments underline how European leaders are watching U.S. political developments closely for potential impact on security and diplomacy in Central Europe.
