UKIM marks 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics

The Department of Economics at the Faculty of Economics, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (UKIM) held a commemorative lecture to mark the award of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Winners and the topic honoured

This year’s prize was awarded to professors Robert Hall of Stanford University, USA, and Michael Woodford of Columbia University, USA "for their contribution to the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization." The lecture presented the prize winners' main ideas and discussed their relevance for monetary and fiscal policy.

Organisers said the event continues a multi-year tradition at the department of convening talks when major international prizes or developments reshape the economics debate. Faculty members, students and guests attended the session, which blended summary explanations with questions from the audience.

Speakers placed particular emphasis on how the laureates’ work links individual optimisation and market frictions to aggregate outcomes — an approach that, they argued, helps clarify why central bank communication, expectations management and policy instruments matter for economic stability.

Attendees noted that the methodological bridge between microeconomic behaviour and macroeconomic policy has influenced both academic research and the policy frameworks used by central banks worldwide.

The Department said it will continue holding similar events aimed at bringing current international research into classroom discussion and policy-oriented debate in Skopje.
