Hungarian parliament lifts Péter Magyar's immunity

On 28 September 2026 the Hungarian parliament voted to strip immunity from three officials, including MP Péter Magyar, clearing the way for prosecutors to investigate an alleged theft dating back to June 2024.

Parliamentary vote and the allegation

A total of 139 lawmakers voted in favour; there were no abstentions or votes against. Prosecutors say Magyar is suspected of stealing a man’s mobile phone and throwing it into the Danube during an argument in a nightclub in June 2024 — an incident for which the alleged damage is put at barely $300.

Magyar denied that his conduct amounted to theft and told MPs that he had “not committed a criminal offence” and that he “accepts responsibility for all my actions.” He also criticised prosecutors for seeking to lift his immunity while parallel motions target two former ministers from Viktor Orbán’s administration.

Those two former ministers face separate allegations: investigators say one is suspected of reckless management of public funds amounting to 17.3 billion forints (53.6 million dollars), and the other of taking bribes and illegal commissions of more than 12 billion forints (37.2 million dollars).

Before the vote, Magyar had asked his own party to support removing his immunity, saying that “anyone with nothing to hide acts openly.” Members of Fidesz and its coalition partner, the Christian Democrats, did not take part in the vote and have dismissed the investigations as political persecution.

None of the three officials whose immunities were lifted has yet been formally charged. Earlier attempts by a previous government to remove Magyar’s immunity while he was a member of the European Parliament were rejected by that body.
