West Nile deaths in North Macedonia rise to 11 after fatal case in Rosoman

North Macedonia reported another fatality from West Nile fever on October 14, 2026, bringing the total number of deaths linked to the outbreak to 11. Local media published the development today, citing recent health bulletins.

Latest case and official counts

The new fatality involves a 66-year-old woman from Rosoman, identified as the 71st registered case in the country. Current tallies show 71 registered cases in total, of which 66 have recovered and two patients remain hospitalized.

The most recent formal report from the Institute of Public Health was released on October 7 and covered data up to October 6. That report recorded 71 cases — 66 confirmed and five probable — and 10 deaths. Media reports published on October 14 indicate the death toll has risen to 11, though no further details about the latest fatality were provided.

Health notices say that no new infections have been reported in the last seven days, according to those same media accounts.

West Nile fever is a viral infection transmitted by bites from infected mosquitoes. Most infected people remain asymptomatic; others may develop fever, headache, muscle aches and flu-like symptoms. In severe instances the virus can affect the nervous system and cause encephalitis or meningitis. Older adults and people with chronic conditions face a higher risk of serious illness.

Authorities recommend protective measures such as wearing clothing that covers the body, using insect repellents, and removing stagnant water from yards and surroundings where mosquitoes breed. Additional official information is expected from the Ministry of Health and the Institute of Public Health.
