September 8: Saints Adrian and Natalia — a day to renew married love
September 8 in the Orthodox calendar honors Saints Adrian and Natalia — an example of enduring marital love and spiritual courage.

On September 8 the Orthodox calendar remembers the martyrs Saints Adrian and Natalia — a couple whose devotion to one another has become a lasting example of marital faith and sacrifice.
Adrian and Natalia were young, wealthy and noble spouses from the region of Nicomedia. They had been married just 13 months when the events that would seal their place in church memory began. Adrian served as a senior imperial official and was publicly pagan; Natalia, meanwhile, was a Christian in secret.
How their story began
When Emperor Maximian launched severe persecutions against Christians, 23 faithful were discovered hiding in a cave near the city and brought to interrogation. Witnessing their calm, humility and endurance left a deep impression on Adrian. At a moment of inner conviction he turned to the clerk and cried out: "Write my name down with these saints — I am a Christian too!"
When the emperor asked whether he had gone mad, Adrian answered with words that entered tradition: "I have not lost my mind; rather, I have come to my senses." Arrest and torture followed: according to the tradition, their hands and feet were broken on an anvil as part of the martyrdom.
Natalia did not flee. She ran to the dungeons, ministered to the chained martyrs, and encouraged Adrian to endure the martyr's crown. Later she carried his relics to Constantinople; tradition holds that, after a vision of her beloved, she died in peace and was reunited with him.
Generations of believers have turned to Adrian and Natalia as patrons of conjugal love, household harmony and the family hearth. On this day many light candles, pray together, ask for forgiveness, and perform small acts of charity to invite blessing into the home. The faithful are also urged to avoid quarrels and to renounce hatred, following the saints' example of unity and forgiveness.
