Ronald Koeman stepped down at the beginning of July after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the round of 16 at the World Cup, and the federation's hunt for his successor has run into fresh obstacles.

Several high-profile names who had been linked to the job — including Arne Slot, Peter Bosz and Erik ten Hag — have declined for various reasons, leaving the association without an obvious next appointment.

Slot, for example, recently officially stated that after his departure from Liverpool he prefers to continue in club football. With leading candidates passing, the experienced Van Gaal has told the Dutch FA he is open to discussions about taking charge once more.

Van Gaal’s potential return would mark another chapter in the Netherlands’ coaching carousel: the veteran coach brings a wealth of major-tournament experience, but his appointment would also surprise many given his age and long absence from international management.

Whether talks progress to a formal offer remains unclear; the federation must weigh short-term needs against long-term planning as it prepares for upcoming qualifiers and tournaments.
