Government orders temporary school‑supplies price cuts until 30 September

The Government of North Macedonia decided at its session on 25 August 2026 to introduce a temporary price reduction for school supplies under the so‑called "school basket" measure.

Under the decision, wholesalers are required to lower prices on school stationery and other school items by 10 percent, while retail sellers must apply a 15 percent reduction. The measure is in force until 30 September.

Implementation and scope

The decision covers products commonly purchased ahead of the school year — notebooks, pens, backpacks and similar school materials — and applies to businesses operating in wholesale and retail trade. The Government gave the measure an explicit end date: 30 September.

Ministries and market inspectors were instructed to monitor compliance and report on enforcement during the coming weeks. The Government presented the move as a step aimed at easing the cost burden on families preparing for the new school year.

Retailers and wholesalers now have a set period in which to adjust their price lists and point‑of‑sale pricing. The deadline for the temporary reductions is 30 September, after which normal price-setting rules will apply unless the Government extends the measure.

Officials said the reductions are mandatory for the specified categories and are intended to cover the peak shopping period before school starts.
