Crews from Public Enterprise "Vodovod i Kanalizacija" — Skopje were forced to respond to a blocked drain in a toilet at the Stiv Naumov student dormitory just two weeks after students moved into the renovated building. The clog was caused by discarded non-biodegradable wet wipes.

The intervention and the appeal

The incident prompted a reaction from Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska, who posted photographs of the room on social media and urged students to act with greater care and responsibility toward public property.

Janevska wrote: "We have provided the most modern conditions for students' stay at the 'Stiv Naumov' student dorm. But for those conditions to remain so, responsibility, conscientiousness and care are necessary from everyone who uses the dorm. Non-biodegradable materials do not belong in the toilet bowl and can cause serious problems with the sewage system," and called on young people to respect the investment and set an example of responsible behaviour.

Authorities said the teams removed the obstruction and the affected rooms were cleaned after the intervention.

The dormitory was recently renovated as a capital investment intended for current and future generations; officials repeated that preserving the upgraded facilities depends on users' behaviour.
