Dead fish found in Treska River near Kičevo; association demands urgent tests

An angling association from Kičevo reported finding dead fish in the Treska River and urged state authorities to act immediately. The Sport Fishing Association "Hunter Fich" posted photographs of the fish on Facebook and called for urgent testing and a prompt institutional response.

Association demands water and fish samples, lab analyses

In its statement the association stressed the ecological importance of the river and asked that authorities take water and fish samples without delay and carry out laboratory analyses to determine the cause of the die-off.

The association also demanded checks of all potential pollution sources and that responsible agencies inform the public of the results and take protective measures. They wrote that the Treska is not a waste channel but a living ecosystem.

Translated quote from the association: "The Treska River is one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in Kičevo. Any pollution, poisoning or other intervention that endangers life in the river must be thoroughly investigated and the cause and responsibility determined."

They added: "Take samples of the water and the dead fish immediately and perform laboratory analyses to determine the cause of the mortality," and urged: "Carry out inspections of all possible pollution sources, and the competent institutions should inform the public about the results and take measures to protect the river and wildlife. We must not allow another such case to go unanswered."

The association closed by appealing to residents to protect the river for future generations: "Let us protect the fish, the water and nature for the generations to come."
