International summer school for pollution monitoring opens in Stip
An international summer school on air, soil and water monitoring opened at Goce Delchev University in Stip in cooperation with the European Commission's JRC.
Goce Delchev University in Stip, in partnership with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, has opened an international summer school focused on monitoring pollution of air, soil and water within the framework of the European Green Deal. Organizers described it as the first programme of its kind in North Macedonia.
Scientific presentations and local-to-global perspective
The first session of the school runs until the end of the week and features daily presentations of scientific papers examining the causes of pollution and the effects of climate change at both local and global scales. Participants include researchers and students from the region and broader Europe.
Organizers said the curriculum combines field-monitoring methods with data analysis and policy discussion, aiming to equip participants with practical tools for measurement and interpretation of environmental data.
Dejan Mirakovski, rector of Goce Delchev University in Stip, said: "With events and scientific schools like this, the causes of pollution will primarily be identified, and when they are known, it will be easier to find solutions to overcome pollution."
University officials noted that cooperation with the European Commission's Joint Research Centre provides access to technical expertise and methodological standards that can help align local monitoring practices with EU frameworks.
Organizers described the initiative as a step toward strengthening regional research capacity and informing evidence-based policy measures to reduce pollution and adapt to climate change.
