Vredi: Grubi case becomes political gamble for Ali Ahmeti

Vredi, a civic organisation, warned that Ali Ahmeti's public defence of Artan Grubi has begun to look counterproductive and could turn the affair into a political liability for the DUI leader.

Vredi: Ahmeti's efforts may backfire

The group recalled that Ahmeti previously insisted no charges would be brought against Grubi and predicted his release, but events moved in the opposite direction: Grubi's pre-trial detention was extended and formal proceedings were opened.

Vredi questioned Ahmeti's motives and warned about the political consequences. "What is Ahmeti trying to prevent? Is he afraid of what Grubi might say? Or is he consciously sacrificing Grubi, thinking that way he will clear the path to return to power?" the organisation asked.

The statement adds that by publicly claiming Grubi's innocence, Ahmeti is applying political pressure on the judiciary — a tactic Vredi says may produce the opposite effect. The group also highlighted that because Grubi is on a U.S. blacklist, visible political pressure on the court could be especially risky.

Vredi recalled DUI's earlier public announcements about re-entering government that did not materialise and noted the party’s weaker showing in local elections. The organisation concluded that, beyond Grubi himself, Ahmeti now risks his own political standing. "Now he is trying to turn the Grubi case into yet another political gamble. Except this time on the gamble is not only Grubi, but Ahmeti himself," Vredi said.
