Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on September 21, 2026, that he has arranged a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York after a phone conversation between the two leaders.
“We agreed to meet in New York and that meeting can change a lot,” Zelensky wrote on X after the call, adding that there is “diplomatic dynamics.” He did not provide a specific date for the meeting.

The announcement came ahead of the United Nations General Assembly’s general debate, which opens on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in New York — a gathering where both presidents are expected to speak.
Since President Trump’s return to the White House, U.S. officials have sought to revive talks aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine, now more than four and a half years long. Previous rounds that included representatives from the United States, Russia and Ukraine have so far failed to produce substantive breakthroughs.
Zelensky said there are “proposals for measures of de‑escalation and for resolving key security issues, such as energy security, the security of food supplies and the protection of human lives.” He added: “We are cooperating with the American team and are ready to take truly decisive steps.”
