7.0-magnitude earthquake hits Pacific near Ogasawara Islands; no tsunami warning
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit near the Ogasawara Islands about 1,000 km south of Tokyo; authorities recorded a 470 km depth and ruled out a tsunami.

A strong earthquake with a reported magnitude of 7.0 struck the Pacific Ocean near the Ogasawara Islands, roughly 1,000 kilometres south of Tokyo. Japan's Meteorological Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami following the event.
Seismic readings and reach
The quake was recorded at a depth of 470 kilometres. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) initially reported a magnitude of 6.3 for the same event.
Despite the distance from the main islands, the tremor was felt across a broad area of eastern and northeastern Japan, according to local reports.
Japan lies where four tectonic plates converge, a geological setting that makes strong earthquakes common. About 10 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater occur in or near Japan.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and will issue any updated warnings if conditions change.
