West Nile virus cases rise in Greece — 232 infections, 19 deaths
The National Public Health Organization (EODY) reports a more-than fivefold increase since the end of July, with most cases in greater Athens.

The number of confirmed West Nile virus infections in Greece has climbed sharply, with authorities reporting 232 cases and 19 deaths since the start of the year, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said on 27 August 2026.
Health officials say the increase represents more than a fivefold rise compared with the end of July, when 42 cases had been recorded; a week earlier the toll stood at 157. The bulk of recent infections have been detected in the greater Athens area, according to EODY.
How the virus spreads and who is at risk
West Nile virus is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most infections produce no symptoms or only mild flu-like complaints, but more severe forms of the disease can develop, particularly in older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Epidemiologists and public-health authorities are urging residents and visitors to take consistent measures against mosquito bites. They especially recommend the regular, repeated application of insect-repellent products and other personal protective steps.
The outbreak is unfolding as Greece remains a popular tourist destination, and authorities say heightened vigilance and protective behaviour are essential to limit further spread.
