A 3.5-metre shark that became trapped in a narrow channel in the South Korean port city of Busan has resisted efforts to guide it back to open water and drew large numbers of onlookers after it was first seen on 18 September.
Authorities deployed five boats and water jets in attempts to steer the animal toward the sea, but those operations have so far failed.
Experts puzzled, public worried
Experts say they do not know why the shark has not returned to the ocean on its own. "One of them said that it may have had difficulty navigating the narrow channel."
There is also concern that the shark may not have eaten since it was discovered, raising questions about its condition if it remains stuck.
The situation attracted an estimated 600,000 people who came to see the animal, turning the site into a crowded spectacle and complicating efforts to manage the rescue.
