Australian court sentences Milena Bogoevska to eight years for manslaughter of neighbour

An Australian court has sentenced 51-year-old Milena Bogoevska to eight years in prison after finding her guilty of manslaughter in the death of her 85-year-old neighbour, Lolin Whitehand. The sentence carries a non-parole period of six years, meaning Bogoevska must serve at least six years behind bars before she can apply for conditional release.

Case details

The court heard that the shocking incident took place in July 2024 in Melbourne. According to the verdict, Bogoevska suffocated Whitehand, placed her body into a bag and disposed of it in the Maribyrnong River; a local fisherman found the body two days later.

After the killing, Bogoevska entered the victim's home and stole cash, jewellery, identity documents and bank cards. Prosecutors said she used the stolen funds to buy lottery tickets, vouchers, shoes and tablets, spending nearly 4,000 Australian dollars.

In sentencing, Judge Jasinta Forbes described Bogoevska's conduct as "opportunistic, calculated and selfish."

Bogoevska originally faced a murder charge, but the prosecution later accepted her guilty plea to manslaughter, and the court imposed the final sentence accordingly.

The case, which drew strong public attention in Melbourne, concludes with the imposed prison term and the specified non-parole period.
