Andy Burnham: Putin will not be invited to the 2027 G20 summit in the UK

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said President Vladimir Putin will not be invited to the Group of Twenty (G20) summit that the United Kingdom will host next year.

Asked in an interview with The Economist whether Russia's leader would receive an invitation to the forum, Burnham replied: "No."

Washington comments and Russia's membership

In September, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Putin would be invited to this year’s G20 meeting in Miami, adding that the Russian president would have an opportunity to speak with U.S. counterpart Donald Trump and other world leaders.

Russia remains a member of the G20 despite Western efforts to isolate it over the invasion of Ukraine. Traditionally, host countries send invitations to all member states.

The 2027 G20 summit is scheduled for November, when world leaders will gather in Manchester. Burnham served as Manchester’s mayor from 2017 until assuming the premiership in July 2026.
