Besim Krasniqi Escapes North Macedonia After Suspension of Prison Sentence
After being extradited from Kosovo and held at Idrizovo, Krasniqi reportedly left the country following a suspension of his sentence.
Besim Krasniqi, a man previously extradited from Kosovo and held at Idrizovo Prison, has fled North Macedonia after receiving a suspension of his prison sentence, sources say.
Authorities have been contacted for confirmation, but so far the Administration for Enforcement of Sanctions and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have not issued an official statement.
Background and charges
Krasniqi was extradited to North Macedonia in May 2024 and transferred to Idrizovo Prison. He had been wanted under an international arrest warrant issued by the Basic Criminal Court Skopje "for serving a prison sentence for committed criminal offenses of robbery, serious offenses against general security and punishment for preparing in connection with the criminal offence of terrorism."
He was arrested on 5 May 2024 in Uroševac, Kosovo, together with three other people; among those detained was his brother, Agim Krasniqi. It is reported, unofficially, that Besim completed the remainder of his sentence while in custody in Kosovo.
If the escape is confirmed, investigators and police units in North Macedonia are expected to open inquiries and coordinate with international partners to locate and return him.
The case remains under further development as authorities review the circumstances that led to the suspension of his sentence and his subsequent disappearance.
