British woman Sofia Mulson moved to Chiang Mai — spends about €1,800 a month
At 23, the former Sussex hairdresser who moved in April 2025 describes living costs in an apartment with a pool and 24‑hour security.

Twenty‑three‑year‑old British woman Sofia Mulson swapped her fast-paced life in the UK for a quieter routine in Chiang Mai, Thailand after moving there in April 2025.
Mulson grew up in Sussex and worked as a hairdresser; on her days off she also earned extra money as a caregiver. She says the change of pace was the main reason for relocating north in Thailand.
Housing, transport and monthly figures
She lives in an apartment that offers a swimming pool and 24-hour security. Her monthly rent is about €580, and she pays roughly €58 for utilities.
Transportation costs are low: she rents a motorbike for about €66 a month, and a full tank of petrol costs less than €6.
Everyday expenses also come cheaper. A meal in a restaurant ranges from €6 to €12, coffee costs about €1.20, and a massage is around €8–10. As Mulson puts it, “I even discovered that meals in local restaurants can be cheaper than cooking at home — it took me a while. That really surprised me at first.”
Altogether she estimates her monthly spending at about €1,800, covering accommodation, food, shopping and entertainment.
