Crisis Management Centre warns of rapid spread of fires as FWI rises
CMC: very high Fire Weather Index in eastern, central and southern regions increases risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.
The Crisis Management Centre (CMC) says that, based on data from the System for Forest Fires – MKFFIS, the Fire Weather Index (FWI) had risen by 09:00 today as daytime temperatures climbed.
Muhamet Ali, director of the CMC, warned that in the afternoon the eastern, central and southern parts of North Macedonia will register a very high FWI, signalling an elevated risk of ignition and rapid spread of open-area and forest fires with very high intensity.
Authorities urge caution outdoors
Other parts of the country are currently at a high FWI level, while higher mountainous areas remain at low to very low levels of the index.
"In conditions of high temperatures and increased fire danger, I appeal to citizens for particular caution and responsible behaviour, especially when staying or moving in nature. Any careless action can start a fire which, in such weather conditions, can spread very quickly and cover a large area," Ali said.
The Crisis Management Centre said it will continue continuous monitoring via MKFFIS and will timely inform and coordinate the relevant institutions as the situation develops.
