Church commemorates Venerable Isakij, Dalmat and Faust
Isakij is additionally commemorated on June 12; Dalmat, once an officer under Theodosius the Great, became hegumen after taking monastic vows with his son Faust.
The Orthodox Church marks the memory of the Venerable Isakij, Dalmat and Faust, with Isakij additionally observed on June 12.
From soldier to monk
Dalmat began his life as an imperial officer in the service of Emperor Theodosius the Great, who held him in high regard. According to the church tradition, a spiritual awakening led Dalmat to renounce worldly rank and honours.
He took his only son, Faust, and withdrew to the suburb of Constantinople, to the monastery of the elder Isakij. There both father and son received the monastic tonsure and entered the ascetic life.
Dalmat committed himself wholly to a God‑pleasing way of life, which brought great joy to the elder Isakij. When Isakij approached the end of his life, he appointed Dalmat as hegumen (abbot) in his stead.
In time the monastic community came to be known by Dalmat’s name — the Dalmatian monastery — and the church continues to commemorate these saints and their example of renunciation and service.
